Objective:
To report a case of verrucous carcinoma of the penis with a long evolution, with special reference to the immunohistochemical study.
Methods:
A 64-year-old male consulted for an exophytic lesion in the penis that he had noted 10 years ago. Physical examination showed no regional adenopathy. The diagnosis of benign papillomatous lesion versus carcinoma was considered. The tumor was excised.
Results:
The histological analysis demonstrated verrucous carcinoma with a very well-differentiated surface and dysplastic basal nests with a tendency to microinvasion. Immunohistochemical studies showed a greater proliferative activity of the Nests (Ki67), but no overexpression of p53 protein.
Conclusions:
Verrucous carcinoma may have a long evolution. Immunohistochemical studies of the Ki67 antigen could be useful to detect microinvasion through a better definition of the more proliferative nests.
