Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the pattern of gastric electric control activity (ECA) in developing neonates.
  • To characterize normal ECA in neonates for comparison with adult and pediatric data.
  • To establish baseline ECA patterns for studying neonatal gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Nine healthy neonates (34 weeks gestation) underwent electrogastrography (EGG) recordings.
  • Recordings were taken hourly for 4 hours at fortnightly intervals from birth to 8 weeks, then bi-monthly until 2 years.

  • Paired sample t-tests were used to compare EGG recordings over time.

    • Gastric 3 cycles per minute (cpm) activity increased from 38% at birth to 57% by 2 years.
