Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology
  • Strabismology

Background:

  • Exotropia (divergent strabismus) is a common ocular misalignment.
  • Prevalence and characteristics of exotropia in specific populations require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To enhance understanding of exotropia, particularly in black populations.
  • To determine the frequency and clinical features of exotropia in Cameroon.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study conducted at Douala General Hospital from November 1991 to June 1998.
  • Included oculomotor examination and skiascopy for 225 consecutive strabismus cases.
  • Analysis of 147 identified cases of exotropia.

Main Results:

  • Exotropia was the most frequent strabismus type (59.51%) in the study population.
  • Onset before age one year occurred in 59.86% of cases; 59.19% had amblyopia.
  • Hyperopia was the most common ametropia (59.86%), and a familial predisposition was noted in 26.53% of cases.

Conclusions:

  • Exotropia is the predominant form of strabismus among black individuals in Cameroon.
  • A significant proportion of exotropia cases progress to amblyopia without intervention.
  • Early and proactive treatment for exotropia is strongly advised.
