Background:

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare, chronic destructive inflammation of the kidney.
It can present in diffuse or focal/nodular/tumor-like forms, posing diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

Surgical material from 10 cases of XGP was analyzed.
The cases comprised 7 diffuse forms and 3 nodular or tumor-like forms.

Findings:

The study details the characteristics of both diffuse and nodular/tumor-like XGP.
Key criteria for distinguishing XGP from renal carcinoma are presented.
