Large polypoid lesions in the colon were observed in a patient with ulcerative colitis. The term "hyperplastic inflammatory polyp" is proposed for these unusual findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
    • Inflammatory polyps are common in UC but typically small.

    Observation:

    • A patient with asymptomatic, well-controlled ulcerative colitis presented with two unusually large, polypoid colonic lesions.
    • Diagnostic imaging included barium enema X-ray and colonoscopy.

    Findings:

    • The observed polypoid lesions were unusually large for inflammatory polyps in ulcerative colitis.
    • Existing histological descriptions inadequately characterized the morphology of these lesions.

    Implications:

    • The term "hyperplastic inflammatory polyp" is suggested to better describe the morphology of these large lesions.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • This terminology may improve diagnostic accuracy and classification of colonic polyps in inflammatory bowel disease.
