Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Cerebrovascular Disease Management

Background:

  • Extracranial carotid occlusive disease requires effective management strategies.
  • Carotid endarterectomy is a common surgical intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role and efficacy of eversion endarterectomy (ECEA) compared to other carotid endarterectomy techniques.
  • Assess the outcomes of ECEA in managing extracranial carotid occlusive disease.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 190 carotid endarterectomy cases (July 1994 - July 1998).
  • Patients categorized into three groups: ECEA, open with primary closure (CEA), and open with patch closure (CEAP).
  • Statistical comparisons were performed between groups.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • ECEA comprised 17% of cases, CEA 8%, and CEAP 75%.
  • ECEA and CEA were more frequently performed in males than CEAP (P=0.01).
  • Overall stroke rate was 0.5%, myocardial infarction 1% (with 2 deaths). CEAP group had 1.4% redo surgery rate.

Conclusions:

  • Eversion endarterectomy (ECEA) demonstrates early results similar to open endarterectomy (CEA) and open with patch closure (CEAP).
  • ECEA is a viable option for managing extracranial carotid occlusive disease.
