  • Pathology

Background:

  • Granulomatous mastitis is a rare, benign inflammatory breast condition.
  • It can mimic malignancy, complicating diagnosis and treatment, especially during pregnancy.

Observation:

  • A pregnant patient presented with symptoms suggestive of granulomatous mastitis.
  • Initial treatments including antibiotics, NSAIDs, progestogens, and bromocriptine were ineffective.
  • The patient's condition deteriorated despite multiple therapeutic attempts.

Findings:

  • Histological examination confirmed recurrent granulomatous mastitis.
  • Corticosteroid therapy demonstrated significant efficacy in managing the inflammation.
  • Interruption of pregnancy was a crucial factor in disease control.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties of granulomatous mastitis in pregnancy.
  • Corticosteroids represent a viable treatment option when standard therapies fail.
  • Management may necessitate considering pregnancy termination in severe, refractory cases.
