Background:

Concussions in professional football pose significant health risks.
Understanding concussion incidence and recognition is vital for player safety protocols.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the incidence and characteristics of concussions in the Canadian Football League (CFL) during the 1997 season.
To assess player recognition of concussions and identify associated risk factors.

Main Methods:

A retrospective survey was conducted among 154 players from the 1997 CFL season.
Data collected included self-reported concussion symptoms, duration, return-to-play time, and risk factors.

Main Results:

44.8% of players experienced concussion symptoms, but only 18.8% recognized their injury.

Recurrent concussions affected 69.6% of injured players, with symptoms lasting over a day in 25.8%.
