Summary

This study reports the first case of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma in the urinary bladder. This rare cancer variant, typically found in the aerodigestive tract, was diagnosed in a 60-year-old woman.

Background:

  • Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma.
  • It predominantly occurs in the upper aerodigestive tract.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old woman presented with persistent urinary tract infections after surgery for incontinence.
  • Cystoscopic examination revealed flat lesions in the urinary bladder.

Findings:

  • Histopathological analysis of the bladder lesions showed nests of basaloid cells with high mitotic activity.
  • Areas of squamous differentiation, squamous metaplasia, and squamous cell carcinoma in situ were also observed.
  • These features are consistent with BSCC.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of BSCC arising in the urinary bladder.
