Summary

A case of pseudomembranous necrotizing bronchial aspergillosis in acute myelocytic leukemia resulted in fatal hemoptysis. Imaging revealed lobar collapse and necrotic bronchial thickening.

Background:

  • Acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) is a hematologic malignancy associated with increased infection risk.
  • Fungal infections, particularly invasive aspergillosis, can be life-threatening in immunocompromised patients.

Observation:

  • A patient with AML developed pseudomembranous necrotizing bronchial aspergillosis.
  • Chest radiography showed lobar collapse.
  • Computed tomography (CT) revealed significant necrotic thickening of the lobar bronchus and adjacent peribronchial regions.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced massive hemoptysis, leading to a fatal outcome.
  • The autopsy findings confirmed the extensive necrotizing bronchial aspergillosis.
