Summary

A final common pathway for tinnitus, involving the amygdala-hippocampal complex, is hypothesized to explain the sensory-to-affective transition in all patients. This pathway may involve altered auditory memory and reduced gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibition, leading to tinnitogenesis.
