Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate alterations in key antioxidant parameters in women experiencing recurrent abortions.
  • To identify potential differences in antioxidant status based on the etiology of recurrent abortion.

Main Methods:

  • Assayed plasma ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, total thiols, ceruloplasmin, uric acid, albumin, and erythrocyte glutathione (GSH).
  • Compared antioxidant levels in 120 women with recurrent abortion (subgrouped by etiology: autoimmune, luteal phase defect, anatomical defect, unexplained) against 25 nonpregnant and 25 normotensive pregnant controls.

  • Impaired antioxidant defense may contribute to recurrent abortions, and conversely, recurrent abortions may lead to oxidative stress and antioxidant depletion.
