Background:

Bulimia nervosa is a complex eating disorder with significant family interactional components.
Understanding family dynamics is crucial for effective treatment of eating disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

To test basic hypotheses regarding family interactions in bulimia nervosa.
To analyze the specific patterns of interaction within families of bulimic patients.

Main Methods:

Utilized micro-analytic coding of family therapy sessions for 20 female patients.
Employed the Göttinger Familieninteraktions-Skalen (GFI) instrument.
Systematically included sibling relationships in the analysis.

The parental dyad exhibited significantly higher conflict levels compared to other family dyads.
A stable pattern of interactional behavior was observed between patients and their parents.

Conclusions:

Parental conflict and the mother-daughter relationship are key areas in the family system of bulimic patients.
Further research is needed to fully elucidate the impact of sibling relationships on family interaction in bulimia nervosa.
