Background:

  • Seborrhoeic blepharitis is a common eyelid inflammation often treated with topical corticosteroids.
  • Chronic use of topical corticosteroids can lead to side effects and may not address underlying causes.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old woman presented with chronic itching and scaling of the eyelid margins.
  • Direct microscopic examination (KOH preparation) of eyelid scales revealed fungal elements consistent with Malassezia furfur.

Findings:

  • The patient was treated with oral itraconazole (100 mg daily or twice weekly) for 8 weeks.
  • Successful clinical and mycological cure was achieved, resolving the eyelid symptoms.

Implications:

  • This case suggests Malassezia furfur as a potential cause of seborrhoeic blepharitis.
