Background:

  • Infantile esotropia is a common form of strabismus in infants.
  • Early surgical intervention is often considered for managing infantile esotropia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate postoperative eye alignment in infants undergoing early surgery for esotropia.
  • To assess the development of binocular visual function, including stereopsis, after early surgical correction.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of nine infants with infantile esotropia underwent uniocular medial rectus recession and lateral rectus resection before 8 months of age.
  • Postoperative eye position and stereopsis (using the Titmus stereo test) were assessed.
  • Patients were followed for a minimum of 4 years.

Main Results:

  • Orthophoria was achieved in 33% of patients, while 44% had residual esotropia.
  • Dissociated vertical deviation was observed in 22% of cases.
  • Static stereoacuity was achieved in 56% of patients, with these individuals generally showing better eye alignment post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Early surgery for infantile esotropia can be beneficial for achieving binocular visual function.
  • Accurate preoperative assessment of deviation stability and diligent postoperative alignment maintenance are essential for optimal results.
