  • Gerontology
  • Gynecology

Background:

  • Bladder training is a common treatment for urinary incontinence, particularly urge incontinence.
  • Its efficacy for mixed or stress incontinence is less established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of bladder training for treating urinary incontinence.

Main Methods:

  • Searched Cochrane Incontinence Group trials register up to July 1999.
  • Included randomized or quasi-randomized trials of bladder training.
  • Data extraction and quality assessment by independent reviewers.

Main Results:

  • Seven trials with 259 predominantly female patients with urge incontinence were analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Bladder training showed a trend towards benefit compared to no treatment, but data were limited.
  • Insufficient evidence exists regarding drug therapy's efficacy compared to or as an adjunct to bladder training.
  • Conclusions:

    • Bladder training may offer benefits for urinary urge incontinence, but conclusions are tentative due to limited evidence.
    • Further research is required to establish the role of drug therapy in conjunction with bladder training.
