Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Gastroenterology
  • Diagnostic Ultrasound

Background:

  • Mesenteric cysts (MC) are uncommon abdominal masses.
  • Sonographic characteristics of MC require further detailed analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the sonographic features of mesenteric cysts.
  • To identify key ultrasound findings for diagnosing MC.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of eight MC patients.
  • Detailed sonographic evaluation including size, shape, echoes, shadowing, and back echoes.
  • Measurement of cystic fluid properties and assessment of blood flow via Doppler.

Main Results:

  • Six MCs were oval or comma-shaped.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Internal echoes, sometimes pseudosolid, were observed in six cases.
  • No lateral shadowing was detected; posterior echo enhancement occurred in one case. Fluid properties and lack of blood flow were noted.
  • Conclusions:

    • Mesenteric cysts display varied ultrasound patterns.
    • The possibility of MC should be considered for avascular oval mesenteric masses.
