Summary

Nigerian preterm infants show a slower postnatal decline in packed red cell volume (PCV). Monitoring PCV and anemia signs for 12 weeks is recommended for these vulnerable newborns.

An interprofessional model of care for oral health during pregnancy.

  • Understanding the trajectory of packed red cell volume (PCV) drop in preterm neonates is crucial for timely intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the rate of packed red cell volume (PCV) decline in Nigerian preterm infants.
  • To establish the nadir and pattern of PCV changes during the early weeks of life in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Weekly PCV measurements were taken in 57 Nigerian preterm babies (gestational age < 34 weeks).
  • Infants requiring exchange transfusion or with major congenital anomalies were excluded.
  • PCV levels and rate of change were analyzed over the first 12 weeks of life.
