Summary

Hypothyroidism can cause kidney problems, including focal segmental proliferative glomerulonephritis. Treating hypothyroidism with levothyroxine sodium can restore kidney function in affected patients.

Background:

  • Renal dysfunction is a significant health concern.

Observation:

  • Two patients with hypothyroidism developed renal dysfunction, including proteinuria, edema, and glomerulonephritis.
  • Symptoms and renal function improved after levothyroxine sodium treatment.

Findings:

  • Hypothyroidism may cause or exacerbate focal segmental proliferative glomerulonephritis.
  • Levothyroxine sodium administration led to recovery of both thyroid and renal function in both cases.

Implications:

  • Hypothyroidism should be considered in the differential diagnosis of renal dysfunction.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism may prevent or reverse kidney damage.
