Summary

Head tremor is common in cervical dystonia (CD), often appearing with hand tremor and a family history of tremor. This suggests a potential genetic link between CD and essential tremor (ET).

Background:

  • Cervical dystonia (CD) is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions in the neck.
  • The presence and clinical significance of head tremor in CD patients are not fully understood.
  • Comparing CD patients with and without head tremor can elucidate distinct clinical features and potential underlying mechanisms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical characteristics, natural history, and therapeutic outcomes of cervical dystonia patients with head tremor (HT+) versus those without head tremor (HT-).
  • To investigate potential associations between head tremor and other symptoms or patient demographics in CD.

  • Prospective evaluation of 114 consecutive cervical dystonia patients over a 9-month period.

    • The association with hand tremor and family history suggests a possible genetic link between CD and essential tremor (ET).
    • Further linkage studies are warranted to confirm the genetic association between CD and ET.
