Summary

Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) did not significantly alter synergistic movement patterns in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Post-surgery patterns remained different from controls, suggesting SDR may not change these specific movement synergies.

Background:

  • Spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP) often involves abnormal synergistic movement patterns.
  • Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is a surgical intervention aimed at reducing spasticity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively compare synergistic movement patterns in children with and without CP.
  • To evaluate the effect of SDR on these movement patterns before and after surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A two-dimensional video system with retroreflective markers was used.
  • Sagittal plane joint angles (hip, knee, ankle) were measured during maximal knee flexion/extension.
  • Correlations between joint pairs (knee-hip, knee-ankle) quantified movement synergy.
