Summary

This study shows that no-stitch phacotrabeculectomy is a safe and effective combined surgery for cataract and glaucoma. Most patients achieved controlled intraocular pressure without medication post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation

Context:

  • Cataract and glaucoma often coexist, necessitating combined surgical approaches.
  • Traditional combined surgeries can involve complex techniques and longer recovery times.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the medium-term success rate of a simplified surgical technique for combined cataract and glaucoma surgery.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of no-stitch phacotrabeculectomy.

Summary:

  • 55 eyes of 50 patients with cataract and glaucoma underwent phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation via a scleral tunnel.
  • A unique "inverse T" incision created a valve mechanism for closure, facilitating a no-stitch technique.
  • At a minimum 6.5-month follow-up, 83% of eyes had intraocular pressure controlled without medication; 17% required new glaucoma medication.

Impact:

  • No-stitch phacotrabeculectomy demonstrates favorable medium-term outcomes for combined cataract and glaucoma management.
  • The technique offers a potentially safer and effective alternative for patients requiring simultaneous cataract and glaucoma surgery.
