Summary

Directly applying chymotrypsin to bone defects in rabbits accelerated bone regeneration and healing. However, intramuscular administration of this proteolytic enzyme showed no significant effect on bone repair.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Biochemistry
  • Regenerative Medicine

Context:

  • Femur diaphysis compact substance disturbance induced experimentally in rabbits.
  • Investigating the role of crystalline chymotrypsin in bone healing.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the effect of local chymotrypsin administration on bone regeneration.
  • To compare the efficacy of local versus intramuscular administration of chymotrypsin.

Summary:

  • Local administration of crystalline chymotrypsin into the wound site accelerated the initiation and activity of reparative processes in rabbit femur defects.
  • Light and scanning electron microscopy confirmed enhanced regenerate formation and complete healing of bone defects with local chymotrypsin treatment.
  • Intramuscular administration of chymotrypsin did not significantly influence the bone regeneration process.
