Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Refractive Surgery

Context:

  • High myopia presents significant visual impairment.
  • Current treatments for high myopia have limitations.

Purpose:

  • To assess the efficacy and safety of clear lens extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) implantation in patients with high myopia.

Summary:

  • The study included 39 eyes of 26 patients with high myopia (mean spherical equivalent -17.0 D).
  • Following clear lens extraction and PC IOL implantation, the mean postoperative spherical equivalent improved to -3.3 D.
  • Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improved in 84.6% of eyes, with the proportion achieving BCVA 0.5 or better increasing from 23% to 59%.

Impact:

  • Clear lens extraction with PC IOL implantation demonstrates favorable visual outcomes in high myopia.
  • The procedure shows a low incidence of complications, including posterior capsule opacification (18%) and one case of retinal detachment (successfully treated).
  • This surgical option provides a viable solution for visual rehabilitation in high myopia patients.
