Summary

Uveitis diagnosis is a complex process that often requires input from both ophthalmologists and internists. A 1992–1995 study at Grenoble University Hospital evaluated the role of internist consultations and laboratory testing in improving diagnostic accuracy. The study included 125 patients and found that a structured diagnostic strategy could achieve a 92% diagnostic rate. Internist consultations contributed to 68% of the final diagnoses, while laboratory tests provided useful information in 77% of cases. Follow-up evaluations led to additional diagnoses in 11% of patients. The proposed strategy included a minimal baseline laboratory panel and targeted testing based on clinical features. The researchers are conducting a new study to further validate the approach. These findings may help standardize uveitis diagnosis and reduce unnecessary testing.
