Summary

A rare case of acute appendicitis caused by ingested bird shot is presented. The foreign body obstructed the appendix, leading to inflammation and requiring surgical removal.

Background:

Foreign body ingestion is an uncommon cause of appendicitis.
Sharp or pointed objects are typically implicated in appendiceal perforation.

Observation:

A 9-year-old boy presented with symptoms of acute appendicitis, including right lower quadrant pain and anorexia.
The patient's history included consuming pheasant meat days prior, which had been shot.
Abdominal X-ray revealed a metallic foreign body in the right lower quadrant.

Findings:

Surgical exploration and appendectomy were performed.
Bird shot was identified as the foreign body obstructing the appendiceal lumen.
Pathological examination confirmed acute appendicitis.

Implications:

This case highlights an unusual etiology of acute appendicitis in children.
It underscores the importance of thorough patient history, including dietary practices involving game.
Radiological identification of metallic foreign bodies can aid in diagnosis and surgical planning.
