Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Disease Control
  • Global Health

Background:

  • Sudan faces significant health service delivery challenges due to civil unrest and resource limitations.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) presents a substantial public health burden in the region.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To illustrate the burden of tuberculosis in Sudan.
  • To review TB control measures implemented.
  • To outline the introduction and assess the outcomes of the DOTS strategy.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized published data on general health and TB epidemiology.
  • Analyzed routine health reports for case notification and treatment outcomes.
  • Employed cohort analysis to track treatment success over time.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Established 179 sputum smear microscopy centers against a target of 290.
  • Reported 82,860 TB cases by mid-1998, with 52% smear-positive.
  • Increased availability of treatment outcomes from 16% (1994) to 63% (1996), with successful treatment rates rising from 62% to 73%.

Conclusions:

  • The DOTS strategy has been successfully initiated and is expanding in Sudan.
  • Monitoring of diagnostics and treatment outcomes shows improvement.
  • Further enhancements are necessary but appear achievable.
