[Whole bladder wall laser irradiation to prevent bladder cancer recurrence with intravesical HpD and ascorbic acid]
1Cancer Institute (Hospital), Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Peking Union Medical College, Beijing.
Objective:
To evaluate the effect of whole bladder wall laser irradiation with intravesical HpD and ascorbic acid on bladder cancer recurrence.
Methods:
Photodynamic therapy(PDT) was performed by intravesical instillation of hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) PsD-007 containing ascorbic acid followed by whole bladder wall laser irradiation in 30 post-operative cases of bladder cancer.
Results:
The tumour recurrence rate was 23.3% (7/30) on follow-up for 30 months after PDT. No photo-sensitizing effects was found on the skin of patients, nor was retraction of bladder observed in any case of this series.
Conclusion:
This method is effective in the prevention of bladder cancer recurrence. Protection from light is not necessary during treatment.
