Summary

Glomus tumors in the airway are rare but should be considered in diagnosis. Reviewing literature found 13 tracheal glomus tumors, suggesting higher incidence than reported.

Background:

  • Glomus tumors are rare neoplasms originating from glomus bodies.
  • Tracheobronchial involvement by glomus tumors is exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A literature review identified only 13 previously reported cases of tracheal glomus tumors.
  • This review also included an additional case, totaling 14 glomus tumors in the tracheobronchial tree.
  • Diagnostic challenges were noted, with three cases initially misdiagnosed as carcinoid tumors.

Findings:

  • The reported incidence of tracheobronchial glomus tumors may be underestimated due to diagnostic difficulties.
  • Glomus tumors can mimic other neoplastic entities within the airway.
