Summary

Complement activation products SC5b-9 and C3a-desArg can help differentiate complicated parapneumonic effusions (CPE) from uncomplicated ones (UPE). Measuring pleural SC5b-9 shows promise for diagnosing CPE in patients with parapneumonic effusions.

Background:

  • Parapneumonic effusions (PPE) are common complications of pneumonia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of complement activation products, specifically SC5b-9 and C3a-desArg, in differentiating CPE from UPE.

    Conclusions:

    • Pleural fluid SC5b-9 measurement appears to be a valuable tool in the diagnostic workup of parapneumonic effusions.
    • This biomarker can aid in distinguishing complicated from uncomplicated parapneumonic effusions.
    • Further investigation is warranted to confirm these findings in larger cohorts.
