Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) can cause intestinal strictures. This study describes a rare case of intestinal inflammatory pseudopolyps developing at the site of a colonic stricture following NEC in an infant.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatal surgery
  • Pediatric gastroenterology
  • Gastrointestinal pathology

Background:

  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a critical gastrointestinal condition in newborns.
  • NEC can lead to serious complications such as intestinal perforation and strictures.
  • The long-term sequelae of NEC are not fully understood.

Observation:

  • A 17-week-old male infant presented with a history of NEC.
  • The infant developed a colonic stricture secondary to NEC.
  • Pseudopolyps were observed at the site of the colonic stricture.

Findings:

  • Intestinal inflammatory pseudopolyps were identified in a patient with a colonic stricture post-NEC.
  • This represents a previously undescribed finding in the context of NEC sequelae.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The pseudopolyps were located specifically at the stricture site.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known spectrum of complications following necrotizing enterocolitis.
    • It highlights the potential for inflammatory polyp formation in response to chronic injury and stricturing.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the pathogenesis and clinical significance of these pseudopolyps.
