Background:

  • Strabismus, or eye misalignment, can stem from various underlying organic pathologies.
  • Identifying these organic causes is critical for appropriate patient management and visual outcome.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the distribution of organic pathologies in patients presenting with strabismus.
  • To determine the frequency of posterior segment abnormalities in this patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, cross-sectional observational study design was employed.
  • 243 patients were examined, with 31 identified as having strabismus due to organic causes.
  • Detailed ophthalmological examinations were conducted.

Main Results:

  • Common diagnoses included toxoplasma chorioretinitis, morning glory anomaly, toxocara retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, and Coats' disease.
  • Esotropia (58%) was more common than exotropia (42%).
  • Esotropic patients had a significantly lower mean age of onset; no correlation was found between visual impairment and deviation direction.

Conclusions:

  • The findings highlight the significant prevalence of organic pathologies in strabismus.
  • Routine fundus examination is strongly recommended for all patients with strabismus to detect these conditions.
