Background:

A significant number of congestive heart failure patients present with preserved systolic function but elevated left ventricular (LV) filling pressures.
This condition, known as diastolic heart failure, is linked to aging, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and arrhythmias.

Purpose of the Study:

To delineate the basic physiologic mechanisms underlying normal and pathological cardiac diastolic function.
To explore the challenges in developing a single, reliable index for diastolic function assessment.

Main Methods:

Integration of in vitro and in vivo basic science investigations.
Utilization of mathematical modeling and simulation studies.
Conducting prospective, community-based studies to define incidence, prevalence, and natural history.
