Tachyarrhythmias in a surgical intensive care unit: a case-controlled epidemiologic study

New onset tachyarrhythmias (TA) in surgical intensive care patients are predicted by SIRS/sepsis, high admission SAPS, high CVP, and low arterial oxygen tension. These factors are independent risk factors for developing TA.

- Sepsis, significant physiological derangement on admission (high SAPS), elevated cardiac filling pressures (high CVP), and hypoxia are independent risk factors for new-onset TA in surgical ICU patients.
- These findings highlight the importance of monitoring and managing these factors to prevent or mitigate TA development.
