We calculated nucleon spin polarizabilities using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our predictions, free of unknown parameters, match dispersive analyses and clarify chiral expansion convergence.
Area of Science:
- Nuclear Physics
- Quantum Chromodynamics
Background:
- Spin polarizabilities probe nucleon structure.
- Chiral perturbation theory is essential for low-energy nuclear physics.
Purpose of the Study:
- To perform a complete one-loop analysis of four nucleon spin polarizabilities.
- To calculate the first nonvanishing isovector and isoscalar contributions without unknown parameters.
Main Methods:
- Heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT).
- One-loop calculations.
Main Results:
- First nonvanishing contributions to isovector spin polarizabilities derived.
- First corrections to isoscalar spin polarizabilities computed.
- Predictions compared with dispersive analyses.
Conclusions:
- The study provides parameter-free predictions for nucleon spin polarizabilities.
- Convergence of the chiral expansion and the role of the delta isobar are discussed.

Atomic nuclei have a net nuclear spin, , which can have an integer or half-integer value. In atomic nuclei, the spins of protons are paired against each other but not with neutrons, and vice versa. Consequently, an even number of protons does not contribute to...
