Summary

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) can cause fatigue and pain. Surgical removal of the parathyroid gland resolved these symptoms in a patient with PHPT, demonstrating treatment efficacy.

Background:

  • Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disorder.
  • PHPT often presents with non-specific symptoms like fatigue, bone pain, and mood changes.

Observation:

  • A 50-year-old male patient presented with significant muscle pain and fatigue.
  • Preoperative assessment revealed elevated ionized serum calcium with normal serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent parathyroidectomy.
  • Postoperatively, his symptoms of muscle pain and fatigue completely resolved.
  • Serum PTH levels increased post-surgery but remained within the normal reference range.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering PHPT in patients with unexplained fatigue and pain.
