Summary

Dyshidrotic eczema (DE) involves hand and foot vesicles. This study found contact sensitization is common in DE, similar to other hand eczema, though work-related causes are less frequent in DE.

Background:

  • Dyshidrotic eczema (DE) is a recurrent vesicular condition affecting hands and feet.
  • Potential causes include atopy, contact allergens, and microbial allergies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of occupational contact allergens in workers with DE.
  • To compare the prevalence of atopy and contact sensitization in DE patients versus other hand eczema (HE) patients.

Main Methods:

  • Patch testing with standard series and patient-submitted materials was performed on 59 DE workers.
  • Atopy history and relationship to occupational activity were assessed.
  • DE patients were compared to 160 workers with other forms of hand eczema.

  • Contact sensitization is a significant factor in DE, comparable to other hand eczema.
  • While contact sensitization is prevalent, its direct link to occupational activity is less frequent in DE compared to other hand eczema.
  • Atopic history does not appear to be a more significant factor in DE than in other forms of hand eczema.
