Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology and Cancer Research

Background:

  • Choroidal melanoma is a rare intraocular malignancy.
  • The role of nm23 protein in tumor progression is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between nm23 protein expression and clinicopathological features in choroidal melanoma.
  • To assess the potential role of nm23 in choroidal melanoma progression.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate nm23 protein expression.
  • Thirty-four choroidal melanoma patients were included in the study.

Main Results:

  • No correlation was found between nm23 expression and age, sex, tumor cell type, size, pigmentation, necrosis, apoptosis, or lymphocytic infiltration.
  • Tumors with low nm23 expression showed higher nuclear grades and predominant mitotic figures, suggesting a potential role in melanoma progression.

Conclusions:

  • nm23 protein expression may be associated with choroidal melanoma progression.
  • Further research is needed to confirm the role of nm23 in melanoma and rule out its involvement in metabolic processes.
