Area of Science:

  • Medical Parasitology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Hydatid disease, caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, typically affects the liver and lungs.
  • Breast involvement by hydatid cysts is exceptionally rare in medical literature.
  • Geographical distribution of hydatid disease is linked to regions with endemic Echinococcus infection.

Observation:

  • A 33-year-old female patient presented with a palpable breast mass.
  • Initial clinical presentation did not suggest parasitic etiology.
  • Pathological examination confirmed the presence of a hydatid cyst within the breast tissue.

Findings:

  • Histopathological analysis definitively identified the breast lump as a hydatid cyst.
  • No other concurrent hydatid disease manifestations were detected in the patient.
  • This represents the first documented case of breast hydatidosis in Nepal.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare parasitic infections in differential diagnoses of breast lesions.
  • Emphasizes the need for increased awareness among clinicians regarding the potential for extraliver/lung hydatidosis.
  • Contributes to the understanding of the geographic epidemiology of hydatid disease.
