Summary

Colorectal neoplasias in Japan show more advanced histologic features, including high-grade dysplasia and early carcinomas, compared to Sweden. The underlying reasons for these differences in nonpolypoid adenoma progression remain unclear.

  • Previous studies suggest geographic variations in colorectal cancer incidence and characteristics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the histologic features of nonprotruding colorectal neoplasias between Sweden and Japan.
  • To investigate potential differences in the advancement and aggressiveness of these lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Histologic review of 781 nonprotruding colorectal neoplasias (adenomas and early carcinomas) from Sweden and Japan.
  • Standardized criteria were applied by a single observer.

Main Results:

  • Swedish neoplasias predominantly showed low-grade dysplasia (LGD) (82.8%), while Japanese lesions more frequently exhibited high-grade dysplasia (HGD) (42.4%).
