Background:

  • Assessing the impact on retinal function is crucial for understanding visual outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate changes in retinal light sensitivity.
  • To investigate eyes with traumatic hyphaema after blunt ocular trauma.
  • To assess recovery at 1 week, 1 month, and 4 months post-injury, excluding retinal injuries.

Main Methods:

  • Visual field testing using the Humphrey Field Analyzer (C-30-2 program).
  • Study included 16 patients with hyphaema post-blunt trauma and no visible retinal lesions.
  • Testing commenced once visual acuity recovered to 0.7 or better.

Main Results:

  • 50% of patients showed reduced retinal sensitivity (MD p<5%) at 1 week.
  • Significant improvement in retinal sensitivity occurred by 1 month (p<0.001) and 4 months (p<0.00004).
  • Only 6% of eyes had reduced sensitivity at 4 months; no correlation with hyphaema extent or angle recession.

Conclusions:

  • Blunt ocular trauma can cause transient retinal light sensitivity reduction.
  • Nearly complete recovery of retinal sensitivity is observed over time.
  • This occurs even in eyes without apparent posterior segment abnormalities.
