Decreased Fas function, crucial for immune regulation, is linked to multiple sclerosis (MS). This immune defect may contribute to MS development and progression, especially in its advanced stages.

  • Fas (CD95) is essential for programmed cell death and immune response regulation.
  • Mutations in Fas or its signaling pathway lead to autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of impaired Fas function in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Main Methods:

  • Assessed Fas-induced cell death in T cell lines from patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), secondary progressive MS (SPMS), and primary progressive MS (PPMS).
  • Utilized monoclonal antibodies (Mab) to trigger Fas signaling and measured T cell survival.

  • Fas-induced cell death was significantly reduced in all MS patient groups compared to controls.
