Multifocal osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer, presents with multiple tumors. This aggressive form of osteosarcoma has a poor prognosis despite intensive chemotherapy treatments.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Pediatric Oncology

Background:

  • Multifocal osteosarcoma is a rare and aggressive variant of osteosarcoma.
  • It accounts for 1-10% of all osteosarcoma cases.
  • Histologically, it often presents as osteoblastic osteosarcoma.

Observation:

  • A case study involved a 12-year-old boy with multifocal osteosarcoma.
  • Initial presentation included a skull tumor with pleural and pulmonary nodules.
  • The patient subsequently developed additional skull tumors, a shoulder tumor, and pelvic lesions.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography revealed a calcified lesion with intra- and extracranial extension.
  • Biopsy confirmed an osteoblastic osteosarcoma.
  • Radiographic studies showed further lytic lesions at new sites.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The patient showed no response to high-dose methotrexate and doxorubicin chemotherapy.
  • Multifocal osteosarcoma carries a poor prognosis despite aggressive treatment.
  • Ongoing debate exists regarding whether this represents true multifocality or an unusual metastatic pattern.
