Summary

The long Gamma nail (LGN) is an effective treatment for subtrochanteric fractures, enabling earlier patient mobilization. This study shows good outcomes with LGN, reducing surgical complications and improving femur fracture management.

Background:

Subtrochanteric fractures present significant challenges in trauma surgery.
The long Gamma nail (LGN) has emerged as a promising technique for managing these complex injuries.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of using the long Gamma nail (LGN) in treating subtrochanteric fractures.
To assess complication rates and time to union in patients managed with LGN.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 51 patients treated with the long Gamma nail (LGN).
Average follow-up period of 16 weeks.
Data collected on patient demographics, fracture union, operative time, and complications.

Main Results:

The average patient age was 72 years, with a mean time to union of 11 weeks.
Overall complication rate was 20% (8% peroperative, 8% early local, 4% late local).
Thirty-day mortality rate was 8%.

Conclusions:

The long Gamma nail (LGN) demonstrates good results in managing subtrochanteric fractures.
LGN facilitates earlier patient mobilization, reduces operative time, surgical trauma, blood loss, and wound complications.
The LGN is a valuable single implant for managing complex proximal femur fractures.
