Summary
Uracil plus tegafur (UFT) shows promise as an adjuvant chemotherapy for maxillary cancer, significantly improving 5-year survival rates. A UFT plus carboplatin regimen is also effective and well-tolerated for advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Cisplatin plus fluorouracil (5-FU) is a standard chemotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
- Uracil plus tegafur (UFT) is an active chemotherapeutic agent for HNSCC.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of UFT as adjuvant chemotherapy for maxillary cancer.
- To assess the efficacy and toxicity of a novel UFT plus carboplatin regimen in advanced HNSCC.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of patients with maxillary cancer treated with UFT versus no adjuvant chemotherapy.
- Prospective study of advanced HNSCC patients receiving UFT plus carboplatin.
Main Results:
- UFT adjuvant chemotherapy for maxillary cancer demonstrated a 5-year survival rate of 71.4% compared to 23.8% without UFT.
- The UFT plus carboplatin regimen achieved an objective response rate of 53.1% in advanced HNSCC.
- Grade 3 or higher leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia were infrequent with the UFT plus carboplatin regimen.
Conclusions:
- UFT is an effective adjuvant chemotherapy for maxillary cancer, significantly improving survival outcomes.
- The UFT plus carboplatin combination is a feasible and effective outpatient regimen for advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma with a favorable toxicity profile.
