    Background:

    • The luteal phase is critical for successful pregnancy.
    • Understanding factors that influence luteal phase length and corpus luteum function is important.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) on luteal phase duration and hormone production.
    • To evaluate the luteolytic potential of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) and its effect on vaginal bleeding.

    Main Methods:

    • Eleven healthy female volunteers received intramuscular HCG to induce a pseudopregnant state.
    • Intravenous PGF2alpha was administered during the luteal phase to assess luteolytic effects.

    Main Results:

    • 2500 IU daily HCG significantly prolonged the luteal phase, unlike 1000 IU daily.
    • HCG administration increased progesterone and estradiol output.
    • PGF2alpha did not consistently decrease hormone levels or induce early vaginal bleeding; bleeding appeared mechanical.

    Conclusions:

    • Higher doses of HCG can significantly extend the luteal phase and enhance hormone production.
    • PGF2alpha, at the dose used, is not a luteolytic agent and its associated bleeding is likely mechanical.
