    Summary

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology
    • Sociology

    Background:

    • Sudden death of a family member can lead to significant psychological distress and functional impairment.
    • Crisis intervention services are often implemented to mitigate negative outcomes in bereaved families.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of crisis intervention services in reducing psychiatric illness and improving family functioning after a sudden bereavement.
    • To identify predictors of outcome in families experiencing sudden loss.

    Main Methods:

    • A controlled study design was employed.
    • Families experiencing sudden bereavement received crisis intervention services.
    • Outcomes were compared to two untreated control groups at follow-up.

    Main Results:

    • The study did not support the hypothesis that crisis intervention services decrease the risk of psychiatric illness.
    • Results indicated no significant reduction in disturbed family functioning among families receiving intervention.
    • No decrease in increased social cost to the families was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Crisis intervention services did not demonstrate a significant positive impact on psychiatric, functional, or social outcomes in this study.
    • Environmental, social systems factors, and individual variables are suggested as powerful predictors of bereavement outcome.
    • Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay of factors influencing recovery from sudden loss.
