Summary

This study explored a propofol-ketamine (PROP-KET) anesthetic combination for critically ill neonates. The PROP-KET mixture proved effective and safe for intravenous anesthesia in opioid-tolerant infants.

Background:

  • A mixture of 3 mg KET per 10 mg PROP was administered intravenously.
  • Infusion rates for PROP were 100-150 microg x kg(-1) x min(-1), with concurrent KET at 30-45 microg x kg(-1) x min(-1).

Findings:

  • Total doses administered were 12-15 mg x kg(-1) for PROP and 3.6-4.5 mg x kg(-1) for KET.
  • Both neonates maintained hemodynamic stability throughout their surgical procedures.
  • The PROP-KET combination was found to be a rational and effective anesthetic approach.

Implications:

  • This PROP-KET anesthetic strategy offers a viable option for critically ill, opioid-tolerant neonates.
  • It provides a safe and effective alternative when anesthesia vaporizers are unavailable.
  • Further research may explore broader applications of this combination in neonatal anesthesia.
