  • Computed Tomography
  • Image Reconstruction

Background:

  • Helical cone-beam computed tomography (CB-CT) is crucial for medical imaging.
  • Existing acquisition and reconstruction methods have limitations in flexibility and exactness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce a new class of CB-CT acquisition schemes.
  • Analyze their impact on reconstruction methods.
  • Enhance flexibility in CB-CT scanning protocols.

Main Methods:

  • Developed new acquisition schemes based on a helix-bounded detector shape.
  • Adapted exact reconstruction algorithms for the new geometry.
  • Introduced the n-PI-method for variable pitch helical acquisition.
  • Presented and verified an approximate n-PI-filtered backprojection (n-PI-FBP) reconstruction method.

Main Results:

  • Acquired data are compatible with exact reconstruction methods.
  • The PI-sufficiency condition is fulfilled.
  • The n-PI-method allows for variable pitches, increasing flexibility.
  • The approximate n-PI-FBP method yields convincing image quality.

Conclusions:

  • The new acquisition schemes and n-PI-method offer significant advancements for CB-CT.
  • Increased flexibility in acquisition protocols is a key benefit for future medical scanners.
  • The presented reconstruction methods ensure high image quality.
