Summary

Inhaled corticosteroid use in asthma can cause voice problems. This study found laryngeal abnormalities, not fungal infections, in patients with steroid-induced dysphonia, suggesting further research is needed.

Background:

  • The exact cause of steroid-induced dysphonia remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the laryngeal abnormalities in patients with dysphonia related to inhaled corticosteroid use.
  • To differentiate the causes of steroid-induced dysphonia from common misconceptions.

Main Methods:

  • Videostroboscopic laryngoscopy (VSL) was performed on 22 patients with dysphonia.
  • Computerized speech analysis was utilized to assess voice parameters.
  • Findings were compared against hypotheses of fungal infection or myasthenia.
